Kenya to Host Sh8 Billion Africa CDC

The Kenyan Cabinet on Thursday approved a request by the African Union (AU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to host Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC) in Kenya.

China has pledged to provide Sh8.3 billion for the construction of a 21-storey building that will house the facility.

In a statement, State House said the setting up of the disease control center will give Kenya a head start in fighting outbreaks such as the coronavirus in addition to creating jobs for Kenyans. 

“The Africa CDC will position Kenya as a regional and continental hub in medical research and disease control, and give the country a head start in combating disease outbreaks like the current Coronavirus pandemic,” State House said in a statement.

“Once complete, Africa CDC will provide job opportunities to Kenyans in technical, administrative and support functions.”
