Court Blocks All Flights from China from Landing in Kenya over Coronavirus

A Nairobi court on Friday issued an order blocking all flights from China from landing in Kenya over coronavirus outbreak.

High Court Justice James Makau ordered the suspension of the flights from China until a case filed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is heard and determined.

“A conservatory order be and is hereby issued in the form of a structural interdict compelling the 1st respondent to prepare and present to the court for scrutiny a contingency plan for prevention, surveillance, control and response systems to coronavirus (COVID 19) outbreak in Kenya,” Justice Makau said.

LSK listed outgoing Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, Transport CS James Macharia, China Southern Airlines, and Kenya Airports Authority as respondents in the case.

The suspension comes barely two days after a China Southern Airlines flight carrying 239 passengers landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The Health Ministry said all the passengers were cleared of coronavirus and advised to quarantine themselves for 14 days, something that sparked public outrage.

Too little, too late. Why does the court have to impose the travel ban and not the Government. Didn't the Health officials in Kenya publicly say that stopping flight is discrimination? What is NATIONAL SECURITY? I am annoyed.

The court lies under Judiciary which is an arm of Government. The health officials must have commented largely on their own judgement. Some decisions needs a full fledged meeting that includes all stakeholders in government which is then communicated to the public by a government spokesperson.

The Kenya government has always been a kiss ass. Chinese communist government is its current financial master and therefore it must trend careful to avoid irritating it. The well being of the common person has never been its priority. It's essential to act rather than react to unfavorable situation. Coronavirus is not and will not be in the minds of the ruling class until it kills one of them

I am with you there Sokora and annoyed as well. When other countries are taking measures to treat Covid 19 with high precaution, limiting travel, we throw caution to the winds and allow 239 folks from China to walk in self-quarantine at god knows where!. For heaven’s sake the US stock market has tanked 11% in the last 6 days - isn’t that enough for us to take extreme measures against getting this virus pandemic into our densely populated cities?

Uhurutos govt has never had the best interest of the people of Kenya this is another perfect example. Miguna is restricted from coming to his home country but over 200 chinese nationals with a high risk of contracting the corona virus fly in the country and are advised to self quarantine themselves.... GoK is a joke.
