Kenya Gov’t Opens Probe against Silverstone Air after Series of Safety Incidents

Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) says it has launched an audit on Silverstone Air Services following a series of air incidents involving the company’s aircrafts.

This follows Monday’s incident where a Silverstone Air plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Eldoret International Airport after a tyre dropped off midair.

The tyre reportedly fell off moments after the airplane took off from Lodwar Airstrip in Turkana County.

The incident happened a day after another Silverstone aircraft hit and damaged another plane at Wilson Airport in Nairobi on Sunday morning.

Less than two weeks ago, a Silverstone flight carrying 55 passengers skidded off the runway and crash-landed shortly after take-off at Wilson Airport. About 10 passengers sustained injuries in the accident but there were no casualties.

On Monday, KCAA said an investigation into the incidents involving Silverstone planes is being carried out by the Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID) of the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development, and Public Works.

“The audit is being performed in order to determine the level of compliance with the current Civil Aviation regulations and their own company approved manuals and procedures,” said KCAA Director-General Capt. Gilbert Kibe.

In August, I flew Silverstone from Wilson to Diani and noticed that the planes are quite old. Not sure whether there is a collection between the age of the planes and recent mishaps.
