Peter Ndegwa Appointed as New Safaricom CEO

Kenya’s leading telecommunications operator, Safaricom has appointed Peter Ndegwa as its new CEO.

In a statement on Wednesday, Safaricom said Ndegwa’s appointment will take effect on April 1st, 2020.

Ndegwa joins Safaricom from British multinational, Diageo PLC, where he has been serving as the Managing Director of Diageo Continental Europe.

He oversees operations of Diageo PLC in 50 countries in Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa region.

"Peter brings a wealth of experience in General Management, Commercial and Business Strategy, Sales and Finance Operations, having spent over 25 years in various roles within the Financial Services and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors in Africa and Europe," Safaricom Chairman Nicholas Ng'ang'a said in a statement.

"We are confident that Peter will carry on our vision of transforming lives while keeping us focused on meeting our customers’ needs and holding us to our new commitment of being simple, transparent and honest."

Ndegwa, who served as East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) finance director in the past, will take over from Michael Joseph, who was named acting Safaricom CEO following the death of Bob Collymore in July this year.

Collymore, who had served in the position since 2010, succumbed to cancer at his home in Nairobi on July 1st. Ndegwa becomes the first Kenyan national to head Safaricom since its establishment.

I'm glad it is Kenyan who worked in Europe because I'm sure his work Ethics is on point and he will maintain standards. I'm happy, this was great choice. Ati qualified Kenyans? They exist? ha ha, you mean the ones who have run down any state owned corporation Kenya Airways notwithstanding !

@Formelyguest2 agreed, work ethics among diasporians is on point no doubt! More diasporians need to be offered these kinds of jobs because they can do better and more efficiently. That said, I hope he is not a push over or a stooge to make Kenyans happy as the wazungus behind the scenes push their agenda. Safaricom is minting money on the backs of poor Kenyans and they have not given back enough to the community. Hope this guy can balance the two, profits and philanthropy.

Impressive cv, unfortunately it no longer makes sense to majority of Kenyans, look at doctors lawyers engineers accountants the list ie endless. As for you Peter you are not a politician an ambulance chaser etc etc. We are watching if a homecoming part is in the making. Good luck

Based on his experience, this is the right man for the job.As to whether he will succeed, it will depend on what support team /cast he will have. He cannot succeed alone. I hope that Kenyans will not frustrate his efforts. Yes he may not be corruptible ,but his assistant may be... you get the drift..If he fails,it wont be due to lack of experience.
@Miss Nairobi, Iam glad that you are willing to give him achance. That's great, just because some corrupt Kenyans have run down some companies is no reason not to have faith in our"homegrown".Its obvious that those who ran the companies down were incompetent.
I wish you success,and the best Mr.Ndegwa.
