Gov't Withdraws Cuban Doctors from Garissa, Wajir Counties over Safety Concerns

The government has withdrawn Cuban doctors deployed to work in Garissa and Wajir counties over safety concerns.

This comes after the abduction of two Cuban medics by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera town on Friday morning.

The two doctors, Landy Rodriguez (a surgeon) and Herera Correa (a general practitioner) have been working at the Mandera Referral Hospital for more than six months.

They are among 100 Cuban medical specialists who arrived in the country in June 2018.

The two were kidnapped in the heart of Mandera town after the gunmen shot dead one of the police bodyguards assigned to them.

The assailants then bundled the two foreign doctors into their cars and drove off before crossing over to Somalia.

The Cuban doctors in Wajir and Garissa have been recalled to Nairobi following a national security advisory.

Meanwhile, a security team comprising of police and Kenya Defense Forces soldiers has intensified the search mission to rescue the two medics.
