Kenya's Public Health Director Slams Chinese Firm for Donating Alcohol to Starving Residents

The director of Public Health Dr. Kepha Ombacho has condemned a Chinese company that donated alcohol to starving Baringo residents on Friday.

Chuanshan International Mining Company delivered a consignment of food items to residents of Katikit village, who are grappling with severe hunger as a result of a drought.

The items included several cartons of beer, 300 bags of maize as well as cooking oil.

Chuanshan International director Han Ke said the company's decision to donate alcohol was informed by the great "love for liquor" by the locals.

"Locals in this area love liquor and I saw it fit to include it as part of food donation to the hunger-ravaged villages," said Ke adding that they wanted to “simplify life” for residents.

Dr. Ombacho has criticized the Chinese firm, saying that it is dangerous to give alcohol to starving people.

“This is just unacceptable. Beer is not food. You cannot introduce alcohol to people who are already starving,” Dr. Ombacho says.

The government official adds that food donations must meet required standards so as not to poison those receiving them.

Aliyekuwa rais wa nchi ya Marekani Barack Obama alisema, "...Just because something is tradition, it does not make it right."

@Imara if you support one man one wife, what do we do with the extra women? Slay queens and mipango ya kando were never in the tradition. Husbands married second wives or third openly. Perhaps this is what has been intrusive and immoral in our Kenyan culture.

My wish would be that people should marry only after they have demonstrated that they can raise afamily. Its too risky to marry have kids and hope along the way you will make it.Not a good start.Ihave also stated that marriage is not for every body.Above all,if we all work hard, and avoid short cuts,we can make Kenya great, and as ndugu Imara said,"even better than the chinese"(translation).Yes we can.

I don't blame them. Kenyans drink more Aloohol than water, from the guy on top to the very one on bottom with his bottle of chang'aa or any Kumikumi products these Chinese can't distinguish between a starving kenyan and a thirsty one.it is a shame to see most of our leaders are rich enough to eradicate hunger in the entire country but greediness and selfinesh is a natural curse to all black people on earth.

In the same breath, you can not allow citizens to starve, its not healthy. Where have you been Ombacho all this time and why have you not condemned the government for being negligent. No one should be starving in Kenya.

Dr. Koni Hanene (not verified)     Sat, 04/06/2019 @ 02:25pm

I agree with those who argue re-colonialization of Africa is a good thing for Africa. Look at how Chinese have uplifted the standard of living for Kenyans in recent years. Chinese have indirectly helped create millions of jobs in Kenya. China has also helped Kenya reduce it's crime rate by upto 80%. Take the motorbike industry for example. Chinese cheap and affordable motorbikes has helped reduce youth's unemployment rate by upto 60% and crime rate by upto 50%. Unemployed youths commit bulk of the crime. Black man's mind all over the World have been sleeping for the last 2,000 years. Without the intervention of other races black man of today still cannot be able to make his own clothes. Africa is blessed with abundance yet foreigners are the ones that make use of that abundancy. Today black man's mind is still in the same level as stoneage mind because the only true indigenous items it can make is the same stoneage people made-spears, bows, arrows and animal skin clothing. Making iron ore or glass in the indigenous point of mind remains as mystery to a black mind as it was 5,000 years ago

Director of public health, your government should have fed its people. Ask your bosses what they have done about the hunger before even the Chinese showed up with bags of food and cans of beer.
I am no doctor but I think beer is more of food than nothing is. Dkt. Ombacho Maybe alcohol is not substitute for food but how and when did you learn that the people are starving? and what had your office done about the starving? be proactive and not reactive director!

BS! At least the Chinese brought food items as well! What has the Kenyan government brought for these people? Nothing!! The govt sqaundered money meant for irrigation schemes and dams now they are slamming Chinese without going after those who stole the tax payers money? kenya's mwizi number one aka mkirito have been vehemently denying the fact that Kenyans we're starving. Wakenya wenzangu, we need to ask ourselves, have we done enough to fight corruption in Kenya? The answer is NO! Sad.

I have a very low opinion of a black mind. Fifty years of independent and still cannot feed ourself and have to depend on foreigners to rescue us from starvation? And we call ourself a nation or a continent? We have made ourself a laughing stalk of the World. The outside World cannot have respect for us because our deeds reflect us as dumb people who cannot feed themselves leave alone make our own clothing. Black men all over the World need to look themselves in the mirror and ask themselves what went wrong. Even our so called
professionals in hospitals like Kenyatta and Nairobi make breath taking dumb mistakes that are worthy noting in the World Guinness book of records-like removing a boys teeth who had gone to the hospital for eye inspection or mixing up patients and removing out half of the normal patient brain. Dumb and inexcusable acts been committed by black men all over the World

Is this Ombacho fellow the voice of the village? These are adults who made a choice to drink, and from what ican tell were very happy with the decision.Food was also brought. If anybody were to complain certainly it wont be Mr Ombacho.Loosen up this was just a one time treat...And now get to work.
It is also worth noting that the clergy is silent on this matter. As well they should. Unless they can feed the multitudes with fish and bread the way Jesus did...

Ndugu yangu @Mugikuyu: (Wathiomo)

Umenichekesha na ilo swali ndugu Imara Daima,But good questionIt reminds me of a man who cheats, but gets mad when his wife,or girl friend cheat...Truthfully, in this day and age,why would anybody want to marry more than one wife. From what I can gather, one wife,is ahandful enough for most fellows.

@Maxiley, I am surprised by the turn of events. I thought all along you aspired to be a polygamist...going by your comments on Mwakilishi? What changed?🤔 Can the real Maxiley please stand up.

The real Maxiley says that human beings were not designed to be monogomous ,that's why to see men and women is relationships cheating, and having all sorts of affairs.Overtime as societies have gone through evolution, man has adapted, and created communities that foster harmony, happiness, and progress. One of the casulties of this evolution is polygamy.Natural law does not say its wrong, its the man's law in someparts of the world. Having said this, I go where my science ,and my brain direct me.And my brain, and science, tells me that one wife is enough for me.Everything being equally considered.

@Imara, this would not apply to me at all. However I am curious to know your opinion especially in cases where we have read about these women representatives eg Wamuchomba in Kiambu who encourage women to be second wives. Would you stop their freedom to marry and have children? Kenya is expected to have a population of about 65million by 2030 and I think we can handle it IF we have a government of smart people like Kivutha Kibwana. Being his supporter I am sure you are aware of how he has transformed his county in just 4 years. The rest he was busy fighting with obstructionists MCAs. Travelling between Athi river to Mombasa for example all you see is bear land. Surely there is still plenty of space in Kenya for more children.

Mumbi (not verified)     Sat, 04/06/2019 @ 10:44pm

Director your government said nobody was starving. Chinese gave starving Kenyans food na ya kuteremsha and now you have something to say. Your government was busy giving Kenyans Huduma numbers instead of food. Shut your trap!

Imara Daima (not verified)     Sun, 04/07/2019 @ 02:17pm

Ndugu yangu @Mugikuyu:

Tembo wawili wapiganapo, nyasi ndizo ziumiazo (where two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers).
