Gov't to Launch Crackdown on 74,000 HELB Loan Defaulters, Including Those in the Diaspora

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has announced that the government will use police officers to track down those who have defaulted on the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loan.

CS Amina says that the crackdown targets more than 74,000 loan defaulters who owe the agency over Sh7.2 billion.

Speaking on Wednesday, Amina said the authorities will look for the defaulters in various organizations in addition to tracking their mobile cash transactions.

“Law enforcement agencies will follow up on loan defaulters and track graduates who are working in various organizations. We will also track mobile transactions,” said CS Amina.

She added: "This will include tracking graduates working in enterprises such as mobile transfer services like M-Pesa, Airtel Money and other emerging jobs. We hope by doing we will increase the resources that are available to HELB to support others."

"We want them to become reliable and responsible citizens by repaying their debts," Amina said.

HELB CEO Charles Ringera says they will partner with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to also track defaulters in the diaspora.

“We are having a large number of graduates leaving the country to work abroad majority who have defaulted,” Ringera says.

The two spoke during the launch of HELB 2019-2023 strategic plan in which they have projected a budget of Sh90.7 billion.

The Kenya government needs to give those 74,000 people jobs and then they can cut their loan payments from their salary.

What a stupid government.

vicky ur full of it???Thry ment diasporas who have left the country meaning wako na majobs pahali wanaishi nawanekataa kulipa meaning they r part of the corruption in kenya juu wamekataa kulipa hio pesa ndio serikali isaindie wale wengine wanahitaji hio pesa.Personally it's easy.Arrest them once they come to visit for holidays or visit their homes for those who r not able to come to kenya n demand the cash from their parents, its that easy.To fight corruption in kenya of any kind u need to introduce tougher rules which r not extra ordinary.

Rather interesting you bring this up knowing there are a few who have stolen BILLIONS from this government and nothing has been done to them. Amina's directive is just a sideshow and a distraction and if you want to fall for it too bad. This government has made it particularly hard for diasporians to vote. Then they hike passports fees but have no problema announcing remittances every month. Pooping on the group keeping the useless shilling afloat. Not wise at all.

For real arrest them? or raid their homes? You must be quite black-hearted towards diaspora. There is a new cash crop called diaspora and the govt is hooked to its remittances. The ministry is just trying to be relevant after the recent fiasco of rolling out the new program. Good thing such draconian measure would remain just an opinion and the govt knows better “Never judge an eagle by the opinion of turkeys”.

Okiya Omtatah sir!,can you use your magic wad to straighten these two institutions HELB and MOE? Since when did police collect debts? First you gave them subpar education programs, you denied them jobs after graduating, a few of them left the country due to economic distress (and are slaving afar to support where the systems are broken back home), others started own businesses, others became innovative and creative with least of govt input. Now you want the police to hunt them down loan defaulters? why not treat them like any other loan defaulters? That law if it exists is defective and only the likes of Omtatah can halt this train wreck.

CS Amina Mohammed has proved to be the most incompetent and a very clueless cabinet secretary of all times. First she comes up with a new education system that fails before implementation, second, she is 'bribed'and talked to by other lecturers from the University of Nairobi hence she named other fake 4 Deputy vice chancellors which was against the will of the comrades and even the will of God. Third, a very informidable and a not worthy saying statement, she wants to liase with the police to arrest the graduates who are busy looking for jobs in the said diaspora and even here in Kenya. We want the government to Create jobs for these youth to get employed. And if you don't know how to do that then ask the undergraduates, they have ideas but they lack funds to implement such ideas into working projects! What a useless government. At the University of Nairobi they have over 70 innovative ideas, fund them and see the difference!
