President Uhuru Endorses Push for Referendum to Abolish "Winner-Takes-All" System of Gov't

President Kenyatta has appeared to endorse a push for a referendum to introduce changes to the constitution in order to alter the structure of leadership in the country.

Speaking in Kisumu in company of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, President Kenyatta says "winner-takes-all" system of government must be abolished if the country is to avoid election-related violence.

The President argues that the current system is not all-inclusive and the law must be changed to make sure that election losers are also rewarded.

“We said we must look at this issue of winner takes all. If that is why some people feel left out of government, we must ask ourselves, 'It is a good thing or not',” says Kenyatta.

"Raila and I agreed we look into solutions on how we can avoid the animosity witnessed after every electioneering period and end bad politics in Kenya," Kenyatta adds.

On his part, Opposition leader Odinga has echoed President Uhuru's remarks, noting that they are committed to solving problems dogging Kenya through the handshake deal.

“Through the handshake, we want to unite Kenya without any ethnic or racial bias...We also want to ensure that elections happen and no Kenyan loses their life," says Odinga.

Kenyatta has also taken the opportunity to assure Kenyans that his administration will win the war on corruption even as he told off those ethnicizing war on graft.

"Those involved in corruption will not be spared. If you steal, you steal alone and not with your community. You should carry your own cross."

"If you're engaged in corruption, you will go to court whether you are a Kikuyu, Kamba, Kalenjin or Luo. When you steal you steal alone. Stop ethnicizing the war on corruption.”

The bottomless pit of ignorance never dissapoints. In all competitions there are winners and losers except in kindergarten soccer. The current consitution as it is is all kenya needs.

It addresses all the challenges that Kenya faces. All Kenyans need to do is read the constitution and take action.

If you are going to create more positions at the top leadership then it is essential to cut down MPs, do away with senators and decrease the number of counties by at least half. The wage bill has become astronomical to the common Wanjiku. Punguza mzigo.

Why reduce the number of counties?
Those of use who come from tribes with small population need representation.

We are not giving birth to compete with tribes that have large population.

Kenya is not just Kikuyu, Kalenjin and Luo's.

This is one of the worst decision ever made in Kenya's history. What is the purpose of voting. If the losers are going to be forced down our throat, why vote?. The reason people vote for the person who wins is because they believe in the policies being advocated by that person. The other person looses because people do not believe in his policies. This is a confused path to the destruction of Kenya as we know it. The creator of this world made it where there is day or night, hot or cold, winners or loosers. Let Kenya not be the experiment of going against nature. This will be the legacy of this administration. Corruption, nepotism, 47 governors, trying to equalize men and women and all manner of confusion. God give Kenya leaders not politicians. God help Kenya!!

Kikuyu and Kalenjin need to realize other tribes will take power at some point or another.
They deserve to get the presidency with the powers it currently has.

Thanks Victoria for teaching me there are Makonde, Ribe, Kauma tribes in Kenya. Are they 10 people or five? Enlighten me. So question is what are you going to do about it? Continue warming your seat and being a keyboard warrior or organize the rest of them 42 tribes so you can win the next general election? Do you have a pressing agenda or you just want the two tribes OUT? Remember, politics is an emotionless game and for your information none of the existing tribes in Kenya would win without joining forces with others so don't be too quick to make enemies. And for your information Ameru are very much part of GEMA so that becomes 27% block which is HUGE 🤗🤗 to win you elections 😂😂. Good luck organizing.

@ Guest 1, I agree with you there. When people feel that the elections were affair,or rigged,in other worlds that their votes were not counted, their will certainly air their discontent.
It is the leaders that are causing these problems of elections. Most do not want to concede defeat. We cannot not all win. There is nothing wrong with winner take all so long are the winner wins fair and square.
We see same thing is sports. Those who dope are shunned, and those who win cleanly are admired, and rewarded.
And losers should be punished for inciting the masses. And the masses should be educated enough to know wnen they are being doped,or bamboozled. It is the duty of the government to offer that education.Enlightend the masses so that they can vote on principle and ideology.

@victoria is right.

GEMA is Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, Akamba.

These are 4 different tribes.Their only connection is they are all Bantu.

Luhya, Taita , Tavetas , mijikenda tribes and a couple of other tribes in Kenya are Bantu.

So Gikuyu cannot purport to claim to be Embus or Merus or kambas belong to the Gikuyu tribes.

These tribes all have different cultures and language.

Only the Kikuyu tribe has stealing as part of their culture.

Unfortunately, Kikuyu's are not Ameru, Embu or Akamba.
Kikuyu's are kikuyus.
Meru's are merus.
Embus are Embu's.
Akamba are Akamba.

GEMA is not Kikuyu. It is an association of 4 tribes. Gikuyu, Embu, Meru and Akamba. The last I checked all those tribes speak their own languages, have their own history and have their own customs.

Learn your history.

Even the slaves in America finally got their freedom.Always remember that.

@Victoria perhaps I did not make myself clear and I agree with you GEMA is a combination of four tribes. Besides the Akambas, the rest have always voted as one block. We have lots of similarities with them than differences in both language and culture. If you want to dwell on the differences be my guest.I did not even count the Embus in the 27% block!! As far as the census goes, we can wait for the next one. If you already think it will be doctored even then, that is a miserable situation to be in. All said and done Kenya is evolving and the common mwananchi is coming to the full realization that their own are cheats.

If there a Kikuyu, Meru and Embu presidential candidate, I can assure you Merus will vote for the Meru candidate and the Embus will vote for the Embu candidate, Kikuyus will vote for the Kikuyu candidate.

There is no GEMA voting Block.Just limited options for Embus and Merus.

FYI: The census count has always been doctored.
Don't think we are not aware of the real population of Kenya.

I got that list from the internet, but I don't believe for a second that the Kikuyu tribe is as big as they claim.Fake census numbers will be exposed soon.

Victoria (not verified)     Fri, 12/14/2018 @ 02:27pm

I oppose.

Other tribes should be accorded the same powers that Kikuyu and Kalenjin presidents have been awarded.

At some point Kikuyu and Kalenjins need to realize they will not be in power. They should accept not being in power like the rest of the other tribes have.

I love everything about the handshake but could the next Kenyan dynastic cycle have started with the handshake?

Exactly, you read right @One2MD. This is SOS campaign by the dynasties. The dynasties have been rattled, and they are re-grouping to save themselves.

How can it be same people who cause the after-election animosity are the ones looking for solutions like these? The solution is a no-brainer...CONCEDE DEFEAT... Same people who fought against ONE-PARTY POLITICS now have seen a different light..... I never thought I'd admit this, Kenya inawenyewe, it looks. God have mercy!
