Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Shuts Down Chandarana Foodplus Outlets over Racism Claims
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has ordered the cancellation of licenses for all Chandarana Foodplus supermarkets in the city.
Sonko announced the shutdown of the chain retailer following claims of racial bias that have sparked outrage from Kenyan social media users.
In a statement to newsrooms, the Governor said he has directed the enforcement of the shutdown beginning Monday.
Chandarana Foodplus has been on the spot after a racially sensitive email leaked online over the weekend, sparking fury.
“We are delighted to inform you that our supermarket chain, would like to give you free vouchers to winner/raffles/best performer/runners-up candidate in upcoming events. As we are now focusing on white people to attract our supermarkets," the email to managers from the retail giant’s Marketing Specialist Rima Patel read.
The email communication appeared to imply that the retail chain was only interested in white customers.
In a statement after the resulting outrage, Chandarana Supermarket apologized for the email stating that it as an error made by “one of our very new and recent hires in the marketing department.”
“Her lack of proficiency in the English language is an easy way to justify this horrendous error.”
“The immense magnitude of this error undoubtedly comes to us as a severe embarrassment and all the apologies in the world cannot make such a wrong a right again,” added the supermarket.

Ya blame it on the new hire but the sentence reads very clear. I do not know what riches Kenya is chasing after if we can not be respected by foreigners. Wakae na SGR na super market zao. Better to be POOR but have your dignity intact. At the US embassy you pay 17k today for a visa appointment but they chase you out like a dog without asking for supporting evidence that is your documents. No refund of the 17k which is very connish.Do they treat Europeans the same when they want American visas? Good Question. Sonko, thank you for stepping up to deal with this nonesense and I wish you were dealing with SGR. We as Kenyans have to speak up. Just because it is not happening to you today does not mean it will not happen to you tomorrow.

Thank you Sonko. Good move, it's a start. If the courts get bribed, Mwananchi must follow and not patronize such businesses. The time reject such treatment of Kenyans is at hand. This is a path to Re-colonization, and must be stopped before Kenyans face a full blown war on racism. It's coming. This is the second scrabble for Africa. We must demand action from our government and if the government fails us, we must take law into our own hands in making sure we expose such businesses. We need to start using our camera's and taping those incidents. May the real God help Kenya!!!
