Kenya’s long-distance runner Diana Kipyokei has been stripped of her Boston Marathon title and $150,000 prize money after she was found guilty of doping.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Tuesday that Kipyokei has been disqualified from the race and handed a six-year ban for multi-doping violations after testing positive for triamcinolone.
"With investigative assistance from the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), the AIU discovered that Kipyokei provided false/misleading information in trying to explain her AAF, including fake documentation which she alleged came from a hospital," said the AIU statement.
"As a result, Kipyokei will now be disqualified as the 2021 Boston Marathon women's winner."
Her sample after winning the 2021 Boston Marathon in October last year was found to have traces of triamcinolone acetonide, a glucocorticoid prohibited at races when an athlete does not have permission to use it as a medication.
The 29-year-old won the Boston women’s race in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 45 seconds, which was 24 seconds ahead of her Kenyan compatriot Edna Kiplagat, a two-time world champion in the marathon.
She will be suspended until June 2028 while Kiplagat will be listed as the race winner.

Congratulation Eda Kiplagat for winning the Boston Marathon at the tender age of 41...And you did it cleanly, since we havent heard otherwise...
To some, sports or rather athletics in this case, may be merely entertainment, but to serious professional athletes like Kipchoge, Faith Kipyegon, and the budding Mary Moraa, its their livehood.
Kenya came very close to being banned from international competitions last month. This year alone, there have been 45 athletes accused of various doping offenses. The highest in the world. Right now any Kenyan who wins is looked at with suspicion. This is very unfortunate, but not surprising since this doping is amere extention of the corruption, and rot we seen in Kenya. However, doing your doping shenanigans within Kenya boundaries may go undetected, or eyes would look sideways for a fistful shillings. But this is not the case with international agencies as Diane found out.
All these 45 doping offenders knew what they where getting into, but decided to take the risk.
Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has vowed to have azero tolerance on doping. But these are just mere words. Words that have been spoken before by others. If the CS is serious, let him make it a crime to dope. If this doping trajectory continues,I feel sorry for our athletes who run clean since they would bear the brunt of the fall out from International bodies that run athletics.
Kenya Olympic committee should mostly punish whoever gave her the banned drugs and fostered their culture of trimetazidine & also find out whether all this testing is a set-up by rival promoters.
We didn’t have doping problems in Kenya until we let in foreigners to run our athletics!
Pretending to be “sponsors” and “agents”, they’ll do anything to m as he some cash out of these poor Kenyans!
Ruining the nation’s stellar reputation as a long distance running giant!
These foreigners don’t care about the reputation damage they cause to our brand!
Anything to get the 30% to 35% of the total winnings!
Diana Kipyokei is not the only person who should be suspended for doping. William Samoei Kipruto should also be stripped of the presidency for doping Chebukati and the commissioners who gave false election results.
