Sonko Confronts Son-in-Law After Daughter Reports Alleged Assault

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko confronted his son-in-law after his daughter reported being physically assaulted at their home.

Sonko said the incident began when his daughter asked her husband about breakfast and was allegedly slapped in response. In a video shared on his social media pages, he described receiving her distress call as deeply unsettling and said no parent could ignore such a plea for help.

He went to the couple’s home with members of his team and confronted the son-in-law, leading to a brief but tense exchange. The husband did not respond when asked to explain the alleged assault.

During the encounter, Sonko said he had been assisting the couple financially, covering rent, school fees, household needs, and the purchase of a luxury vehicle, emphasising that abuse can occur even in financially stable households. Sonko used the incident to highlight the wider challenge of gender-based violence in Kenya, noting that if his daughter could face such treatment, many other women were likely enduring similar experiences without support.

He encouraged survivors to seek help, adding that hospitals across Nairobi, including those serving low-income communities, provide medical and counselling services for victims of gender-based violence. He also stopped his entourage from retaliating physically, saying that violence would not resolve the situation.

Sonko later removed his daughter from the home and delivered a firm warning to her husband. Sonko urged young couples to manage disagreements with patience and communication.
