Three Suspects Cleared in Kyalo Mbobu Murder Investigation

Three people arrested in connection with the killing of Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu have been released without charge after forensic and ballistic tests cleared them of involvement.

Eric Muhia, Paul Mbugua, and Georgia Wainaina were freed on Saturday evening following police investigations that included analysis of a recovered firearm and independent verification of their alibis. The three had been held as persons of interest after Mbobu was fatally shot on 9 September while driving along Magadi Road towards his home in Karen.

According to police reports, Mbobu was attacked by two men on a motorcycle, one of whom approached on foot and fired several shots through the driver’s window. No property was taken, and investigators have described the shooting as a targeted killing.

The arrests occurred before the completion of forensic procedures, prompting criticism from defence lawyer Musa Maulid, who called the detentions “malicious” and an abuse of police authority. He said all three individuals had been fully cleared through independent evidence and questioned the decision to publicise their names before proper investigations were completed.

The case has raised concerns about investigative procedures and the potential damage to reputations when suspects are identified prematurely. Mbobu, a prominent commercial lawyer and former chair of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, had been involved in several legal disputes at the time of his death. Police have not confirmed any motive, and no suspects remain in custody.
