ODM and Kanu Face Key Tests Ahead of November By-Elections

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Kenya African National Union (Kanu) are facing critical internal and regional tests ahead of Kenya’s by-elections set for 27 November.

ODM has announced party primaries in Ugunja and Kasipul constituencies, to be held between 24 and 27 September, following increased competition for party tickets. The move is aimed at managing rising tensions over nominations. According to Emily Awita, chair of the party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee, the process will be transparent and credible, with preparations already in place.

While opting for primaries in the two constituencies, ODM has issued direct tickets in wards where candidates were unopposed, including Chewani, Kisa East, Purko, and Namaan. A direct nomination has also been given to former Magarini MP Harrison Kombe, whose 2022 election was nullified by the courts over irregularities.

The Ugunja seat became vacant after James Opiyo Wandayi was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum. In Kasipul, the position opened following the assassination of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were in Nairobi, an incident that has cast a shadow over the upcoming vote.

In Baringo County, focus is on the Senate by-election triggered by the death of UDA Senator William Cheptumo in February. Attention has turned to Kanu Chairman Gideon Moi, who has not confirmed whether he will contest. Moi lost the seat to Cheptumo in 2022 and has remained non-committal, stating only that he will speak to the people “when time is ripe.”

Local leaders have urged Moi to run, citing his absence from regional politics. However, with UDA currently holding key seats in Baringo, including governor and woman representative, his potential return is being closely watched. UDA has cleared nine aspirants for its Senate nomination, scheduled for 20 September.

The candidates include Vincent Kiprono Chemitei, Daniel Kiptoo, and Wycliffe Tobole. Campaigns are already underway, with candidates outlining their priorities in rallies across the county.

Chemitei, campaigning in Eldama Ravine and Mogotio, has focused on youth employment and fiscal discipline. Kiptoo, from Baringo Central, is emphasising leadership experience and responsive governance. Tobole, speaking in Mogotio, has prioritised infrastructure and security.

Independent candidate Benjamin Chebon has also entered the race, reflecting growing interest in bypassing traditional party systems in favour of direct voter outreach.
