Pakistani Suspect Nearly Lynched Over Alleged Job Scam in Nakuru

A Pakistani national accused of fraud was rescued by police from a mob in Nakuru County and taken into custody.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Shabbir, was confronted by residents who accused him of financial deception before police intervened to prevent violence. Two other individuals believed to be involved in the alleged scheme fled the scene and are currently being sought by law enforcement.

Preliminary investigations indicate the group may be behind multiple fraud cases reported across the region. Authorities believe the suspects used false promises of investment opportunities or job placements to obtain money from victims, often requiring upfront payments. These methods, according to the DCI, have been used in similar cases targeting economically vulnerable individuals.

Shabbir was previously charged with obtaining money by false pretences and had been released on bond. He was required to report to Ahero Police Station on 20 August but failed to comply. Police records show he continued his alleged activities despite the ongoing legal proceedings.

“It was also established that Shabbir was out on bond from Ahero Police Station… but instead continued with his fraudulent activities,” the DCI said in a statement.

This incident follows a separate fraud case in Lang’ata sub-county, where a man was arrested in connection with a counterfeit gold transaction involving another Pakistani national, who reported losing over KSh 4.5 million (USD 34,800) after receiving fake gold. The arrest was made at Sultan Suites in Ngong View Estate, and investigations are ongoing.

Police say the recent arrests point to a wider trend of cross-border fraud operations exploiting regulatory gaps. The DCI has reiterated its commitment to pursuing those involved and strengthening investigative efforts to disrupt these networks. The main suspect remains in custody as authorities work to locate his alleged accomplices and build a case for prosecution.
