Fires Destroy Several Luxury Resorts in Malindi Within Hours

Several tourist resorts in Malindi, Kilifi County, have been severely damaged by fires over a two-day period, with at least 20 cottages destroyed across three properties.
The latest incident occurred on Wednesday morning at Harbour Key Cottages, a luxury resort where flames gutted multiple units. Each cottage could accommodate up to five guests, with rates starting at Ksh12,000 per night. Images shared online show entire structures reduced to skeletal frames, with interiors left charred and unrecognisable.
Earlier that day, a fire also broke out at Happy Side resort, located near Coral Key Hotel, which had been destroyed by fire the previous day. The close timing and proximity of the incidents have raised concern among residents and business owners.
Harbour Key Cottages is situated just metres from Oasis Village Hotel, which was similarly affected by a fire in March 2021. Authorities have not yet released any official statements regarding the cause of the fires or details of the emergency response.
While some local reports suggest possible arson, no evidence has been confirmed. Community members have questioned the effectiveness of the region’s firefighting capacity, citing slow response times and a lack of resources. The damage poses a serious challenge to Malindi’s tourism sector, which plays a key role in the local economy.
