Ruto Claims Raila’s Presidency Would Mirror His Reform Agenda

President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga today appeared together to support key national reforms.
Their joint appearance at a parliamentary group meeting in Karen brought together members of both the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The meeting stems from a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two leaders in 2024, which called for dialogue and cooperation on national issues.
During the gathering, both Ruto and Odinga stressed the need to prioritise national development over political rivalry or personal popularity, signalling a possible shift toward consensus-driven governance. At the centre of their discussion was a 10-point reform agenda that includes proposals on economic recovery, electoral justice, and the fight against corruption.
President Ruto acknowledged that some of his initiatives—such as the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and the affordable housing programme—may not be popular, but he maintained they are essential for the country’s long-term well-being. He also noted that many of these ideas were echoed in Raila's past campaign platforms, suggesting a growing alignment in their policy goals.
Raila, meanwhile, took a strong stance against corruption, particularly within Parliament. His remarks reinforced the message of shared accountability and signalled his willingness to work with the government on anti-graft measures. The meeting also reaffirmed the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), including proposals to ensure fair political party financing and a more inclusive budget-making process.
Additionally, the leaders addressed the importance of national healing and compensation for victims of past political violence.
