IEBC Restores Voter Verification Portal After Unannounced Outage

Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reactivated its voter verification portal, following a temporary suspension attributed to scheduled system maintenance.

The portal, a crucial tool for citizens to confirm their registration details ahead of elections, was restored on Tuesday after being offline for several days. The unannounced outage sparked public concern and criticism due to a lack of prior notice and transparency. The IEBC has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused.

According to the electoral commission, the interruption was necessary for a "migration to new infrastructure," aimed at enhancing system performance and data security. The upgrade is specifically intended to bolster readiness for the 2027 General Election.

The IEBC said that the details of all 22.1 million voters registered during the 2022 election have not been compromised. The commission emphasised that the integrity of voter registration records remains intact. The portal allows registered voters to verify essential information such as their name, polling station, and constituency.

Users can access the system by entering their national identification number and year of birth, with an option to print their details for personal records. Despite the commission's assurances, the timing and handling of the maintenance have attracted criticism from civil society groups and the public.

The absence of advance warning and a clear restoration timeline fueled speculation, particularly against the backdrop of Kenya's history of disputed elections and public distrust in electoral institutions. The IEBC's initial communication offered minimal detail, raising questions about accountability in managing vital public systems. Observers note that while conducting infrastructure upgrades well in advance of the next general election is prudent, the manner in which this process was managed undermined public confidence.

The opacity, especially the failure to communicate the scope and duration of the maintenance, has been a concern. In Kenya's politically charged environment, where digital platforms play a central role in electoral engagement, communication lapses can have significant consequences. The voter verification portal is a vital component of Kenya's democratic process. The IEBC has encouraged Kenyans to utilise the restored portal, even with the next election two years away.

This proactive approach, the commission argues, will assist in identifying and resolving any discrepancies in voter data well in advance of polling day. However, the IEBC faces increasing pressure to demonstrate institutional reliability as Kenya approaches the 2027 elections.
