Gachagua Adopts Ruto’s Hustler Strategy in Bid for Kenya’s Presidency

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has formally broken with President William Ruto, announcing the formation of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as a platform for his anticipated challenge in the 2027 presidential elections.

The move signals a significant fracture within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and sets the stage for a potentially volatile battle for political dominance, particularly in the crucial Central Kenya region. Gachagua's announcement follows months of escalating tensions between the two leaders, culminating in his impeachment in October 2024.

Once staunch allies who campaigned on a shared “hustler” and “bottom-up” economic agenda, Gachagua now accuses Ruto's administration of betraying the interests of the working class and neglecting the specific needs of Central Kenya, the region that played a decisive role in securing Ruto's 2022 victory.

The DCP, unveiled with the Swahili slogans “Skiza Wakenya” (Listen to Kenyans) and “Skiza Ground” (Listen to the People), attempts to capitalize on populist sentiment and appeal to a broad spectrum of voters, including the politically active Generation Z. Gachagua has emphasized the party's commitment to economic empowerment and political inclusivity, integrating young leaders and representatives from various social groups into its structure.

The party's chosen symbol—an ear cupped by a hand—underscores its claim of attentiveness to the concerns of ordinary Kenyans. Gachagua's strategy mirrors Ruto's own successful breakaway from then-President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of the 2022 election, where Ruto established UDA as his vehicle for challenging the status quo. Now, Gachagua is applying a similar approach, directly challenging Ruto's hold on Central Kenya and asserting that the region will no longer support his re-election.

The formation of the DCP has attracted a number of prominent defectors from the ruling UDA, including former party spokesperson Cleophas Malala and dismissed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi. More significantly, Gachagua has aligned himself with opposition figures such as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party-Kenya's Eugene Wamalwa, and veteran politician Martha Karua, signaling an attempt to build a broad coalition capable of challenging Ruto's incumbency. The viability of Gachagua's political gambit remains uncertain.

While he aims to reclaim political dominance in Central Kenya, some analysts question whether his approach offers substantive policy alternatives or merely recycles familiar narratives. Uriri MP Mark Nyamita, of the opposition ODM, has dismissed the possibility of a serious challenge to Ruto's reelection bid, labeling talk of a “one-term presidency” as misguided. Other critics suggest that Gachagua's efforts could further fragment the opposition, rather than creating a cohesive force capable of unseating the president.
