Opposition Leaders Unite at Gachagua’s Home to Challenge Ruto Ahead of 2027

A high-stakes political realignment is underway in Kenya as key opposition figures convened at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's Wamunyoro home to strategise against President William Ruto's administration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The gathering, which included prominent leaders from across the country, signals a concerted effort to present a unified front against the ruling Kenya Kwanza government. Among the attendees were People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

These leaders affirmed their commitment to prioritising a unified opposition over individual political ambitions, aiming to provide a formidable alternative to the current administration. Gachagua, a vocal critic of President Ruto, has framed the meeting as a demonstration of inclusivity within the Mt Kenya region. He refutes accusations of tribalism, asserting the region's readiness to collaborate with leaders from all parts of Kenya.

"President Ruto branded me a tribalist and tried to divide the people of the mountain, but I stopped him," Gachagua stated. "Today, it is clear that we, the people of this region, are ready to work with all Kenyans."

Karua echoes this sentiment, emphasising that opposition unity is crucial to addressing the hardships faced by Kenyans. She accuses the government of failing to uphold justice, citing recent arrests of journalists investigating alleged killings in Parliament. Matiang’i has reinforced the call for unity, pledging to prioritise the collective goal over individual political aspirations.

"We will heed the call of Kenyans. We will sacrifice our ambitions and ensure we liberate this country," he affirmed.

Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi distanced himself from the fertiliser scandal, alleging that the controversy was orchestrated from State House and promising to release documents proving his innocence. In a counter-move, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi led a separate gathering in Nyeri County to rally support for President Ruto’s administration.

Accompanied by five MPs from the Mt Kenya region, Mudavadi warned that abandoning the government could lead to the region's political marginalisation. He defended his decision to merge his ANC party with UDA, urging residents to embrace unity and dialogue. Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa criticised Gachagua’s efforts, accusing him of betraying the region by leading its people away from the government.

He reaffirmed his unwavering support for President Ruto, dismissing opposition efforts as misguided. The intensified political manoeuvring underscores a strategic effort by the opposition to consolidate power ahead of the next election. The ruling coalition remains steadfast in its defence of the government’s agenda.
