Construction of Sh1.7 Billion Floating Bridge Across Likoni Channel Begins

The construction of Sh1.7 billion floating bridge across the Likoni Channel in Mombasa has started.

The bridge is expected to be complete in November this year and will link Mombasa Island to the mainland south. The construction is being done by Chinese engineering company, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The suspension bridge runs from former Outrigger Hotel next to Kenya Coast Guard headquarters in Mvita sub-County and crosses the ocean to Peleleza area in Likoni sub-County.

It will be a composite structure designed for pedestrians only and will feature a 529 m long floating section, and 54 m long approaches on either side of the floating span.

Evans Momanyi, a sub-contractor of the project, said the construction of the causeway and a holding bay will be completed before the end of August.

Momanyi added that guard rails will be installed on either side of the footbridge to ensure pedestrian safety.

At the moment, residents of Likoni rely on ferries to access the Mombasa island and vice versa. At least 300,000 passengers and more than 6,000 cars cross the Likoni Channel daily.

This bridge should have been built like 40 years ago by Kenyans themselves. I do not understand why Kenya has engineers who can not build a freaking bridge and one that floats...which again is no big deal. What a shame!
Only Kenyans can change Kenya not foreigners.
