8 Kenyan Fishermen Found Alive 18 Days After Their Boat Capsized in the Indian Ocean

Eight Kenyan fishermen whose boat capsized in the Indian Ocean on December 8th, 2019, have been found alive.

The fishermen were reportedly found on Christmas day treading water in the open sea, having drifted a distance of seven hours from the location where their vessel capsized.

They survived the harsh deep-sea for a mind-boggling 18 days, surviving on 58 kilograms of lobster and fish that they had caught that day, according to the Chairman of the Fishermen Association of Malindi, Yunnus Aboud. The eight were fishing in an Alhafidh Fibre 15HP boat in Ziwayu, Kilifi County before it was wrecked by a series of powerful waves.

They were all found in bad shape and are currently receiving specialized treatment at Malindi sub-county hospital. The eight were spotted and rescued by marine police on patrol.

“Their boat was taken to the deep waters and capsized by strong winds and they have been in the ocean,” said Malindi Sub County Police Commander Vitalis Otieno.
