An Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Lamu County has been arrested for allegedly freeing a suspected drug trafficker.
Shadrack Mumo, who is in charge of Kizingitini Police Station, is accused of releasing a suspect who had been arrested with a drug substance.
Confirming the arrest, Lamu Police Commander Muchagi Kioi said OCS Mumo freed a suspected drug peddler who had been nabbed with bhang, a mobile phone, and a knife at Mtangawanda Jetty in Pate Island.
Kioi said Mumo was detained as investigations into how the suspect disappeared from police custody under his watch continue.
“We received intel that some drugs were being taken to Kizingitini on Sunday, after which police officers intercepted and the suspect was arrested. He was later released after negotiations with the officers led by the OCS,” Kioi said.
Initial investigations revealed that Mr. Mumo received a bribe of Sh50,000 to release the suspect.
Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said the criminal is claimed to have escaped while being interrogated at Kizingitini Police Station. Macharia vowed to take stern action against police officials found to have colluded with drug dealers.
