Kenyan Man Charged with Conning Businessman of Sh25.7 Million in Fake Gold Scam

A man was on Thursday arraigned in a Nairobi court for allegedly conning a Kenyan businessman of Sh25.7 million.

The suspect, Jonathan Okoth Opande, is said to have obtained the cash from city businessman Samuel Olaleye by falsely pretending he was in a position to sell him 250 kilograms of gold.

He is accused of committing the offense at Lagos hotel in Nairobi between January 19th and February 18th, 2019, where he allegedly presented himself to the complainant as one of the directors of a gold-trading company.

Appearing before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot at Milimani Law Courts, the 32-year-old was charged with obtaining money under false pretenses and extortion.

The accused denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000. The case will be heard on September 17th, 2019.
