Mt. Kenya Leaders Dismiss Deputy President William Ruto's Assassination Claims

A group of MPs drawn from Mt. Kenya region have dismissed Deputy President William Ruto's claim that there is a plot to eliminate him.

Speaking to the media at Parliament buildings on Monday, the leaders claimed that the assassination allegations were an attempt by Ruto to incite the country against the Mt. Kenya region.

The MPs spoke hours after four Cabinet Secretaries were summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters over accusations of plotting to kill Ruto.

The four are Peter Munya (Trade), Joseph Mucheru (ICT), Sicily Kariuki (Health), and James Macharia (Infrastructure).

“If surely he (Ruto) believes that something was being planned, why can’t he just do the statement and then we follow up from there?” Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba posed.

“We’re not here to defend evil; if there is evil let it be known to be evil, but let’s not peddle lies in the name of politics.”

Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu said Ruto was trying to use the allegations to incite Kenyans against the president.
 
“We see this as a badly disguised attempt to incite the rest of the country against our region, against our leaders, and against the President,” said Ngunjiri.

On his part, Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange noted: “Let’s leave the CSs to do their job. If it is political, if it is a party, let us fight a war within the party and among ourselves as politicians.”

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Monday, DCI George Kinoti confirmed that DP Ruto called him claiming that there was an attempt on his life.
