Kenyan Woman Quarantined After Showing Ebola-Like Symptoms Tests Negative for the Deadly Virus

A 36-year-old Kenyan woman who was quarantined at Kericho County Referral Hospital on Sunday evening after exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms has tested negative for the deadly virus.

Tests conducted on the woman's blood samples at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) in Nairobi also revealed the patient was negative for any Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers.

“The result of the tests carried out by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratories on the blood samples from the 36-year-old lady who is currently admitted in the isolation unit at the Kericho County Referral Hospital have been confirmed to be NEGATIVE for Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) and other Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Monday evening.

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said the government is well prepared as far as Ebola prevention and response measures are concerned, noting that there is no need to panic.

In a media briefing earlier, CS Kariuki allayed fears of an Ebola outbreak in the country.

“I wish to reassure all Kenyans and our visitors that we do not have any cases of Ebola and indeed the Ministry has undertaken and continues to implement the preparedness measures,” she stated.

The woman had traveled to Kericho from Busia, a town neighboring Uganda, where Ebola killed two people last week.
