Six Suspects in Fake Sh2 Billion Seized at Barclays Bank in Nairobi Named

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed the identities of the six suspects arrested on Tuesday in connection with Sh2 billion fake currencies.

The six were arrested after Flying Squad officers impounded the counterfeit currency at Barclays Bank, Queensway Branch in Nairobi’s Mama Ngina Street.

The fake cash, in United States dollar bills, had been stashed inside a safe deposit box.

FAKE DOLLARS

The six have been identified as Dr. Erick Adede (Owner of the Box), Ahmed Shah (Fake Investor), Elizabeth Muthoni, Irene Wairimu Kimani, Boaz Ochich, and Charles Manzi, both Barclays Bank officials.

Dr. Adede contested for Homa Bay Town parliamentary seat in the last general election but lost to Peter Kaluma of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

He also unsuccessfully contested for the Gor Mahia Football Club Chairmanship position.

In a statement, Barclays Bank says Adede concealed counterfeit currency in his personal safe deposit box against banking rules.

“The contents of personal safe deposit boxes are not part of the bank’s deposits and are only known to the client; however, these may not include items prohibited in terms of the law," the banks says.

The incident comes a few weeks after detectives from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit intercepted Sh32 billion in fake currencies in a private house in Ruiru.

Three suspects including Joseph Munyao, his wife Ruth Kalee, and Nancy Muthoni Muchori were arrested in connection with the counterfeit currency.

Also recovered in the house was 70 kilograms of fake gold pieces.

Barclays closed its operation in Kenya many years ago. This fake Barclay is running a scam because that box is not the ordinary safe. Ordinary safe is a locker that has numbers and the size of a shoe box or a bit larger. That box looks like the money that was removed from Barclays strong room.

This level of criminality involving Barclays bank is beyond belief and its hard to believe this scandal and the other of 32 billion (all in fake currency) are not related. They probably use same printing company. Should be an international crime that way they can serve their sentences in all the countries affected.. assuming they bribe their way out in Kenya.

The bank is involved in this major financial crime. Let us stop kidding ourselves such a monster operation involves bank officials. That box is not a safe deposit box whatsoever. What a country.
