Deputy President William Ruto Isn’t Our Presidential Candidate in 2022, Jubilee Vice-Chairman David Murathe Says

Jubilee party Vice-Chairperson David Murathe says Deputy Present William Ruto should exit the political arena together with President Kenyatta when his term expires in 2022.

Murathe, a confidant of President Kenyatta, further says that the ruling party doesn't have a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that says Ruto will be its presidential flag bearer in 2022.

“Truth be told, as a party, we have no MoU with anyone that we have to support you come 2022. If he had an agreement with President Uhuru Kenyatta, then that was only between them,” says Murathe.

Murathe, who spoke during the Maragoli Cultural Festival, says Kenyatta and Ruto shared the government equally and should both retire in 2022.

"If he (Ruto) has a MoU with Uhuru Kenyatta, then that was an agreement between two individuals," says Murathe.

He adds: "If you (Ruto) have led with Uhuru for two terms, what else do you want. We don't know someone who will guard us but we know someone who will break us. We will take someone who will safeguard Mt Kenya."

"From 2013 when we took government, we shared everything and he got some of the plum jobs like Finance, Agriculture, Energy and all. But everything he got he kept to himself leaving Uhuru to share his half with the entire country, we will not allow that," Murathe notes.

Murathe, who joined ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli to the event, says Jubilee party has no 2022 presidential candidate.

" Let you not be deceived by the Tanga-tanga movement because both Ruto and Uhuru have served their full terms and should retire together," he remarks.

Mr. Murathe, let me teach you a bit of history or refresh your mind here. Moi was a VP before he became President. Kibaki was a VP at some point before he became President. Raila was a PM before he vied for presidency. Your friend Uhuru was a DPM before he became President. What are you telling us now? What has changed? Is it because you have a personal vendetta with Ruto? Let Ruto run for the highest office in the land. To be fair to all, the constitution does not bar him. When you speak of change the constitution forum, you remind us of the late Kihika Kimani led movement to change the constitution in order to bar Moi from ascending to the presidency. Did it work then? The Mt. Kenya people have every right to choose who they want to be the next president. Last two terms, they chose your bosom buddy Uhuru and you never gave a whimper? Why are you shouting now three years out to curtail their choice? Ruto and any other eligible candidate have a right to vie for votes anywhere in the country. We are a democracy and not a patriarchy. If you too want to run, stop interfering with the constitution to make way for yourself. That would be selfish. Stop your political intrigues and come out clean.

I lost him when he said, "We will take someone who will safeguard Mt Kenya." The only way Kenya will move forward is by erasing the strong rooted tribal thinking in their DNA. Mr. Murathe, we need someone who will put the interest of the ENTIRE country first! That means safeguarding the interests of ALL THE KENYAN TRIBES and in my view that will be Kivutha Kibwana. #Tosha.

Spot on. People like Murathe are the ones who threaten the entrenchment of democracy and its attendant values. Kenyans (in this particular case, Kikuyus) need to shun such types for a more just society. Ruto, like anybody else, deserves his chance to be rejected (or embraced) by Kenyans and not by a small clique of self-aggrandizing people.

Dada Vicky, Umesema kweli: "The only people supporting William Ruto are the people who have stolen public funds and need his protection."
