Detectives Raid Migori Governor Okoth Obado's Residences

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday morning raided Governor Okoth Obado's residences in Nairobi and Migori counties.

The raid is part of EACC's investigations on the Governor and his cronies over alleged loss of public funds from the Migori County government coffers.

The officers also raided Migori county government offices in search of documents to support corruption allegations against the Governor.

The anti-graft agency accuses Obado, who has also been charged with the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, of looting close to Sh2 billion from the county government through companies registered by members of his family.

“The commission received credible information that a few persons well known to be proxies of the governor, registered several companies for the purpose of fraudulent acquisition of public funds through fictitious contracts,” says EACC in court documents.

In September, EACC announced that bank accounts belonging Governor Obado and his brothers had been frozen pending completion of investigations into the claims.

The agency says Obado's brothers identified as Jared Peter Odoyo, Oluoch Kwaga, Ernest Omondi Owino and Joram Opala Otieno are part of an intricate web that siphoned funds from the county government accounts.

EACC further says that some of the looted funds were channeled to accounts registered under names of Obado's children in Australia, Hong Kong and China.
