Detectives Launch Investigations into Death of 12 Infants at Nairobi's Pumwani Maternity Hospital

Detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations into circumstances leading to death of 12 infants at the Nairobi's Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

This comes after the corpses of the infants were discovered by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko during an impromptu visit to the facility on Monday.

Sonko arrived at the hospital in a boda boda after receiving reports from some patients that the facility had switched off machines at the new-born unit, leading to death of several infants.

An official at the facility told the Governor that only one baby had died at the facility in the past 24 hours but after searching the place, 12 bodies were found stuffed in separate plastic bags – one containing six bodies, another with five and the last with one body.

Investigators led by Buruburu DCIO Jeremiah Ikiao have grilled staff, management and mothers at the hospital to establish whether allegations that the babies died due to negligence are true.

Governor Sonko has since suspended top officials at the Hospital including the entire board.

Those sent home include Superintendent Catherine Mutinda, Administrators Zadock Angahya and George Nyadimo and obstetrician gynecologist James Kamau.
