Three Seriously Injured as Bees Disrupt Operations in Nyeri CBD For Hours

Several people had to run for their lives after a campaign rally of an aspiring Nyeri women representative on Thursday was stormed by a swarm of bees, forcing the aspirant, campaigners and the crowd to scamper for safety.

Three people were seriously injured after the bees attacked the central business district, disrupting activity.

The trio who sustained sting injuries were rushed to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital for treatment.

Nyeri Central Assistant County Commissioner John Marete, while confirming the incident, said that the injured were responding well to treatment. “Very many of us were stung but only three (cases) were serious but they have been treated and are stable,” said Marete.

Sources revealed that the insects were accidentally upset from their hives by National Youth Service (NYS) cohorts who were cleaning an area in the town.

Services at the Nyeri Huduma Centre and several regional offices were halted for the better part of the afternoon following the attack as staff and clients took to their heels to escape from the wrath of the irate bees.

Motorists and pedestrians using the route were also forced to use alternative routes to access the central business district.

Normalcy was restored hours later after the insects retracted.
