Mudavadi Warns Diaspora: Respect Foreign Laws and Mind Your Online Presence

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has warned Kenyans to avoid taking part in the political affairs of neighbouring countries.

Speaking at Moi University’s School of Law in Eldoret, Mudavadi said many citizens travel abroad without understanding foreign legal systems, leading to arrests and diplomatic challenges. He reminded Kenyans that constitutional rights and freedoms enjoyed at home do not apply beyond national borders.

“Many end up on the wrong side of the law,” he said, urging travellers to be aware of local regulations in the countries they visit.

His warning follows recent incidents in Uganda and Tanzania, where several Kenyans were detained for involvement in politically sensitive activities. In Uganda, two activists, Bob Njagi and Nick Oyoo, were held for more than a month after attending a rally linked to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine.

In Tanzania, several Kenyans were arrested during the country’s elections and later described their experiences as harsh and “horrific.” Mudavadi said such cases show the risks of ignoring foreign laws and political contexts.

He also highlighted growing concerns about online conduct, noting that social media activity can influence visa decisions and travel opportunities. Speaking at a summit on artificial intelligence and digital behaviour, Mudavadi said foreign authorities increasingly review applicants’ online profiles before issuing visas.

“There is now a tendency for social media checks before a visa is issued,” he said, cautioning that offensive or inflammatory posts could harm prospects for study, employment, or migration.

Mudavadi encouraged young people to maintain responsible and positive online profiles, saying this could strengthen their reputation and improve opportunities abroad.

“A clean and constructive online presence can enhance their growth, improve their prospects, and open doors to greener pastures,” he said.
