DCP Will Prioritise Voices of Ordinary Kenyans, Gachagua Tells Kenyans in Maryland

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently on a high-profile tour of the United States, his first international foray since leaving office last October.

The visit, which began on 10 July, forms a central part of a broader strategy to reconnect with the Kenyan diaspora and garner support for his newly established Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) in preparation for the 2027 General Elections.

Gachagua, accompanied by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, was greeted by members of the Kenyan community upon their arrival in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday evening.

The reception, which included traditional songs and dance, underscored the cultural pride and enthusiasm that characterise such diaspora gatherings, setting the stage for a series of engagements designed to foster dialogue and build grassroots momentum for his political revival. In a statement released upon arrival, Gachagua praised the resilience and vibrancy of Kenyans living abroad.

He described their "indefatigable spirit" and noted that their "resilience, warmth, and vibrant culture continue to inspire."

The tour, branded "Engage the Diaspora," will span several American cities throughout July and August. It features a mix of town hall meetings, social events, and cultural showcases featuring Kenyan artists based in the US.

These events serve a dual purpose: to strengthen ties with the diaspora and to raise the profile of the DCP, which Gachagua now leads following his departure from mainstream political structures. The former Deputy President has already inaugurated satellite party offices in Seattle, Washington, and Boston, Massachusetts.

These developments signal a concerted effort to institutionalise the DCP's presence beyond Kenya's borders. Sources close to the tour indicate that additional offices are planned in other cities as the campaign progresses.

Gachagua's message throughout the tour focuses on inclusion, responsiveness, and reform.

He has repeatedly emphasised the party’s commitment to listening to ordinary Kenyans, both at home and abroad. During one engagement, he observed that "for many years, the pleas of Kenyans have gone unheard," adding, "We are here to change that narrative and build a platform that truly reflects the aspirations of our people."

The DCP, still in its formative stages, positions itself as a citizen-centric alternative to traditional political parties. According to Gachagua, its founding principles are rooted in participatory governance and equitable representation. The diaspora tour thus functions not only as a campaign vehicle but also as a litmus test for the party's resonance among Kenyans living overseas.

Political analysts view Gachagua’s US visit as a calculated move to reassert his relevance within Kenya’s evolving political landscape. His removal from his previous role last year created a void in his political trajectory, and the formation of the DCP appears to be a strategic response to that setback.

With the 2027 elections still two years away, Gachagua is laying the groundwork for a sustained campaign that leverages diaspora networks, digital platforms, and grassroots mobilisation. His emphasis on listening and inclusivity may appeal to voters disillusioned by the status quo, particularly those who feel marginalised by existing political structures.

The inclusion of cultural events and concerts featuring Kenyan artists adds a layer of soft diplomacy to the tour. These gatherings not only celebrate Kenyan identity but also foster a sense of community among diaspora members. Remittances from abroad contribute significantly to Kenya’s economy. Meanwhile, political actors are increasingly courting diaspora communities for both financial and electoral support.

The influence of the Kenyan diaspora extends beyond mere financial contributions. They also bring diverse professional expertise, contributing to innovation and entrepreneurship within Kenya. Many diaspora members actively engage in philanthropic activities, supporting education, healthcare, and infrastructure development in their home country.
