Kenyan Teen in Maryland Survives Devastating Crash, Recovers After Brain Surgery

Nineteen-year-old Victor Waweru, a Maryland resident, continues his remarkable recovery following a severe car crash on June 4, 2025.
The accident, which occurred in Frederick Maryland, left Waweru with critical injuries, prompting an emergency response. According to reports, Waweru's vehicle overturned multiple times before colliding with an electricity pole. The impact prevented further rolling, potentially saving his life. Found critically injured and initially non-verbal, Waweru was airlifted to a trauma centre where surgeons performed a craniotomy to alleviate pressure from severe brain swelling.
"Yes, I could have been non-verbal or, worse, dead. But I thank God" Waweru reflects.
Following the accident, Waweru experienced memory loss, unable to recall the event or the days leading up to it. His cognitive recovery is now underway through intensive speech, physical, and occupational therapy.
"From the ICU to how far I've come through rehab it's all God," he states.
Waweru attributes his survival to wearing a seatbelt and sitting low in the vehicle. This personal experience fuels his dedication to promoting car safety. While Waweru estimates his recovery at 90 percent, the incident has placed a significant emotional and financial burden on his family. His parents, Jane and William Waweru Mbogo, have taken extended leave from their jobs to provide full-time care, resulting in a temporary loss of income and increasing medical expenses that put them in a financially precarious position.
Looking ahead, Waweru anticipates a further six months of therapy with work and driving restrictions. His focus remains on regaining his strength and returning to his passion for working with cars.
"I had an angel with me that night," he concludes. "This life I'm living is solely because of Him."
