Family of a Kenyan Woman Who Drowned in a Pool in Canada Appeals for Financial Help

The family of a Kenyan woman who drowned in a pool in Ontario, Canada while live-streaming her swimming session on Facebook is appealing for financial help to bring her body back to Kenya for burial.

24-year-old Hellen Wendy Nyabuto was enjoying an afternoon swim on Thursday when she tragically drowned about 10 minutes into the live video. Her phone continued to record for over three hours.

The deceased lived in the city of Toronto and worked a temporary job in Collingwood, her brother Enock Nyabuto says in a GoFundMe page created to collect contributions for the family.

“We are soliciting your generous donation to repatriate her body to Nairobi, Kenya as per the wishes of our family. The cost to repatriate the body is approximately $50,000,” reads a message on the page.

“It is such a devastating and sad moment because she was our sole breadwinner and was the one who was in charge of everything back at home. She has left a very big gap that we cannot fill at the moment.”

Hellen, who hailed from Mesesi Village home in Bomachoge Chache, Kisii County, relocated to Canada in December 2019 after securing a 10-year study visa via a lottery program.

My condolences to the family, but please don't make this a chance to make money. Such a funeral from US/Canada to Kenya is about USD 15K. That $50K estimate is exaggerated. Again, my sincere condolences.

Well said and rambirambi kwa jamii. Unfortunately I think a sad situation is being misused. They have seen the billions sent back to Kenya and they want some of that. For the life of me, why won't Kenyans buy insurance? It is really cheap and will mitigate the scenario above. https://www.ratehub.ca/insurance/life/cost-of-life-insurance

How come this story is not reported in Canada? Canada does not issue 10 yr. Student Visa or green card card. There's so much discrepancy in this story. Produce more facts including police reports and which morgue the body was transferred to.

The police in Toronto and Collingwood don't have a report of this. These type of incidents are always reported in the Canadian media. The authorities found it was strange nothing was reported. I personally gave the story to the biggest news media station in the area City TV, yesterday, online and on a voicemail. They have not reported anything. This is extremely abnormal. The facts of Hellen's status and activities in Canada are inaccurate completely. She was not in Canada on a study permit. She was not a nurse. The authorities suggested reporting to the Canadian Fraud/Scam Department for investigation.

RIP. $50,000 is it Canadian dollar or USA dollar? If USA dollar it is too much. It cost about $20K to ship the body back to Kenya.

What happened to burying the dead where they died? I wanna be cremated or buried in the same country I die in, after all, I am dead! I don’t wanna burden the living, after all, they have a life to live, and I have the dead to chat with! Yup

At 24 she could get it real cheap. Too many of us choose to spend it at places like 5bucks coffee when 3 of those a month get you huge amounts that might even make cūcū kana maitū well of in Kenya after all burial expenses
