Winnie Odinga Announces Bid for Nairobi Senate Seat in 2027
🎧 Listen to this story

Winnie Odinga has announced plans to contest the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election, setting up a potential race against other prominent political figures seeking the position.

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member made the announcement at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Siaya County during a gathering to mark the first anniversary of the death of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The event brought together family members, political allies and supporters to remember the late opposition leader.

Addressing the gathering, Winnie said she intended to pursue the seat if it became available in 2027. She referred to current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has expressed interest in seeking higher political office, placing her announcement within the emerging debate over the position's succession.

She did not disclose which political party or coalition she would use to contest the election. However, her announcement comes as political leaders begin preparing for the next electoral cycle, with Nairobi expected to remain a key battleground because of its large electorate and influence on national politics.

The capital has long been an important political base for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). A contest involving Winnie and other prominent figures associated with the party could therefore have implications for its candidate selection and internal political alliances ahead of the election.

Winnie also placed youth participation at the centre of her message, presenting her potential candidacy as an opportunity to encourage more young Kenyans to take part in leadership and governance. She emphasised the role of young people in shaping the country's political future.

Her focus on youth engagement could become a defining feature of her campaign as she seeks to establish her appeal among younger voters. It also places generational representation among the issues likely to feature in discussions surrounding the Nairobi Senate race.

She could face competition from Lang’ata East MP and entertainer Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, who has already declared his intention to contest the seat under the ODM banner.
