UK Police Investigate Death of Kenyan Woman Killed During Caregiving Duty in Birmingham

A Kenyan caregiver, identified as Wanjiru, has died following a violent incident in Birmingham.

Her death occurred on 23 June at a residence in Winson Green, days after her children joined her in the United Kingdom. Wanjiru, a single mother of four from Mataara, Gatundu North, Kiambu County, had relocated to the UK in 2023 to work in the care sector. The incident took place during an overnight shift.

Police reports indicate that a patient, described as having mental health challenges, allegedly attacked Wanjiru with a blunt object. The alarm was raised when Wanjiru missed scheduled check-ins. Officers discovered her body at approximately 1am after entering the property.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as severe blunt force trauma to the head. The death has prompted widespread sorrow and concern, particularly amongst the Kenyan diaspora and within UK caregiving communities.

Wanjiru's brother, Gilbert Mbugua, expressed his devastation: "She had just brought her twins to the UK. She was so happy. Then this..."

West Midlands Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Wanjiru's journey to the UK represented a pursuit of a better future for her family. Following her relocation in 2023, she successfully arranged for her children, including her eldest son and twins, to join her.
