Ruto Vows Extra Rewards for Harambee Stars

Kenya’s Harambee Stars have been eliminated from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a narrow penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar in the quarter-finals.

The tightly contested match, held at Kasarani Stadium on 22 August, ended 1-1 in regular time before Madagascar edged the shootout 4-3. While the result was a disappointment, the team’s spirited performance has reignited national enthusiasm for football and drawn widespread praise.

The match began with promise after Alphonce Omija gave Kenya an early lead. However, Madagascar levelled through a penalty, setting the stage for a tense and evenly matched contest. With neither side able to break the deadlock, the outcome was left to penalties, where the visitors emerged victorious, ending Kenya’s hopes of advancing to the semi-finals.

Despite the loss, the Harambee Stars’ campaign has been hailed as a major step forward for Kenyan football. The team went unbeaten in the group stage, securing impressive victories against Morocco and DR Congo—two established football nations. Their run in the tournament has been viewed by many as a turning point, both for the team and the sport’s future in the country.

President William Ruto, speaking from Japan where he is on official duties, commended the team’s resilience and the unity it inspired across the nation. He noted that the Harambee Stars had “silenced doubters” and restored belief in the potential of Kenyan football. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki echoed the President’s sentiments, confirming that the government intends to formally recognise the team’s achievements through the Ministry of Sports.

Throughout the tournament, President Ruto has shown strong support for the team, including offering significant financial rewards to boost morale. Following their successful group-stage performance, each player received KSh 5 million, with further bonuses promised for continued progress. Although the early exit means some of those incentives will not be claimed, the President has reiterated his long-term commitment to developing football in the country.

While there is understandable disappointment over the quarter-final exit, the mood across the country remains optimistic. Kenya, as co-host of the Pamoja CHAN tournament, will continue to play a key role in the competition. President Ruto has encouraged Kenyans to attend the remaining matches and show their support, urging fans to “fill Kasarani with cheer, energy, pride, and love for the game — all the way to the final whistle.”
