Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich ran the second-fastest women’s marathon in history on Sunday, successfully defending her Chicago Marathon title.

Chepngetich, 28, broke the tape in two hours 14 minutes and 18 seconds, just 14 seconds off the world record of 2:14:04 set by her compatriot Brigid Kosgei in Chicago in 2019.

“I wanted to break the world record … but I’m happy. Next time, I will not miss it,” Chepngetich said.

American Emily Sisson finished second in 2:18:29, breaking the American record of 2:19:12 set by Keira D’Amato on January 16th. Kenyan Vivian Jerono Kiplagat third with a time of 2:20:52

Kenyan Benson Kipruto won the men’s race in 2:04:24, a personal best and the fastest winning time in Chicago since 2014. He added another major marathon title on top of his win in Boston last year.

Defending champion Seifu Tura of Ethiopia was second in 2:04:49 ahead of Kenyan John Korir, who finished third in a personal best of 2:05:01.

Congratulations. I hope the Mashamba government can take care of our heroes. These men and women raise our flag high but at home, they get zero accolades.
