Wetang’ula and Oparanya Call for Luhya Bloc to Back Ruto Re-Election

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya have urged the Luhya community to support President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027, calling for regional unity as a foundation for a future presidential bid.

Speaking in Lurambi Constituency, Kakamega County, the two leaders addressed a gathering of local residents, Members of Parliament, and county officials. Wetang’ula described the 2027 election as a turning point for Western Kenya, stating that a unified voting bloc could strengthen the region’s political influence and pave the way for a presidential candidate from the community by 2032.

“The 2027 General Election will be a defining moment for our community. Our unity and voting pattern will determine our political destiny in 2032,” he said.

The event marked a renewed alliance between Wetang’ula and Oparanya, who previously took different political paths after contesting jointly in 2002. The two leaders said their cooperation reflects a broader shift in Western Kenya’s political leadership and a shared goal of advancing regional development and representation.

Wetang’ula noted that the current administration presents new opportunities for the community, adding, “The broad-based government has brought us together once again, and our common agenda is to secure development for our people and position the community for future leadership.”

They highlighted several government initiatives in the region as signs of progress, including the resumption of long-delayed infrastructure projects and a Sh500 million allocation for the completion of Kakamega Level Six Hospital. They also cited President Ruto’s frequent visits to Western Kenya as evidence of the government’s commitment to the region.

Referencing prominent past leaders such as the late Vice President Kijana Wamalwa and Masinde Muliro, Wetang’ula urged the community to build on their legacy in the pursuit of greater national influence. Other elected officials at the event echoed this message, arguing that collective support for Ruto would increase Western Kenya’s bargaining power in future political negotiations.

The call for unity comes amid growing recognition of regional blocs as key players in national elections. For Western Kenya, which has often been seen as politically divided, the push for cohesion is both a strategic move and a step toward addressing long-standing underrepresentation in national leadership.
