Gachagua and Kalonzo Delay Gusii Campaign as Internal Rifts Surface

A planned campaign tour of Kisii and Nyamira counties by Kenya's opposition alliance has been postponed, possibly due to logistical constraints and security concerns. 

The tour, spearheaded by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party chief Kalonzo Musyoka, was intended to bolster support in the Gusii region ahead of the 2027 elections, targeting the political heartland of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i. The two-day event's postponement follows earlier discord sparked by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who cautioned Gachagua against imposing external political agendas, particularly regarding the "one-term" campaign rhetoric. 

Although Arati later softened his stance, acknowledging Gachagua's role in challenging President Ruto's administration, the initial remarks ignited speculation about internal divisions. While organisers attribute the postponement to inadequate preparations, with a local MP, speaking anonymously, affirming that logistical shortcomings and anticipated turnout necessitated a strategic pause, the episode underscores the symbolic importance of Matiang'i's political base. 

The opposition's efforts to reclaim ground in Kisii and Nyamira are viewed as a strategic manoeuvre to consolidate support around potential presidential contenders and reshape the coalition's narrative. The postponement marks a temporary setback for the opposition, which has redirected its efforts to Western Kenya, staging rallies aimed at reaffirming unity.
