Kiraitu’s ‘Bus’ Party Joins Gachagua’s Camp, Aims to Unseat Ruto in 2027

The Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP), identified by its "Bus" symbol, has officially aligned itself with opposition forces, marking a significant departure from its previous neutral stance.

The announcement, made during the party's National Delegates Conference (NDC) in Embu on June 16, 2025, signals a unified front against the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration in the lead-up to the 2027 general election. The shift was spearheaded by National Chairman Lenny Kivuti, who articulated the delegates' discontent with the current government's policies, particularly highlighting concerns over extrajudicial killings, economic stagnation, and the failure to fulfil key electoral promises.

Kivuti emphasises that the party's decision was driven by a commitment to address the grievances of ordinary citizens and act in accordance with the popular will. While DEP will not merge with any specific party, it will actively collaborate with prominent opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Justin Muturi, Fred Matiang'i, and Martha Karua. Their collective aim is to challenge the existing administration and champion comprehensive political reforms.

Kivuti says the party seeks to "liberate the country from the chains of oppression" and will actively support campaigns challenging the government. DEP's strategy for the upcoming electoral cycle includes a strong emphasis on grassroots mobilisation, with a particular focus on engaging Generation Z, recognising their increasing political influence. The party also intends to advocate for marginalised communities, including women and persons with disabilities, to ensure their inclusion in policy-making processes.

Regionally, DEP plans to field candidates in various counties, with a targeted presence in Embu. Notably, delegates endorsed Newton Kariuki, the current Muminji Ward representative, as their candidate of choice for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat. Kariuki will contest the seat under the Democratic Party (DP) banner, with DEP offering its full support to solidify their collaborative alliances. The NDC was attended by DEP party leader and former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi.
