Government Pushes Key Developments in Homa Bay Ahead of Madaraka Day

With Madaraka Day celebrations fast approaching on June 1, the Kenyan government is intensifying its focus on completing several key infrastructure projects across Homa Bay County.
This push aligns with President William Ruto’s broader agenda to strengthen ties with the Nyanza region through rapid development initiatives. A flagship project is the upgrading of Raila Odinga Stadium, bolstered by a government allocation of Sh500 million. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, accompanied by Governor Gladys Wanga and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, recently inspected the facility, which is being transformed into a modern 12,000-seater venue.
Complementing the stadium project is the completion of the Kendu Bay Water Supply and Sanitation facility. This Sh673 million investment aims to significantly improve access to clean water and sanitation services for local residents. Simultaneously, the upgrading of the Kadel-Ramba road to bitumen standard, at a cost of Sh3.7 billion, seeks to improve transportation and connectivity within Homa Bay County.
Beyond infrastructure, the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs is spearheading several projects to boost the local economy. These include the establishment of fish landing sites in Mainuga, Nyakula, and Nyandiwa, designed to support local fishermen and enhance the region’s blue economy. Additionally, the construction of a modern fish market at Koginga beach and the rehabilitation of Homa Bay pier, with a combined cost of approximately Sh600 million, are expected to stimulate commercial activities.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been actively engaged with government officials on these projects. While maintaining that he is not part of President Ruto’s administration, Odinga has hosted numerous cabinet and principal secretaries at his Capitol Hill office. These interactions with high-ranking officials, including Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, highlight his sustained interest in ensuring the effective execution of development initiatives.
Other significant projects include the prioritisation of last-mile electrification across Homa Bay’s 11 sub-counties, and the establishment of a county aggregation and industrial park at Riwa, valued at Sh498 million. These endeavours resonate with President Ruto's vision of inclusive national development, previously emphasised during an April meeting with Homa Bay leaders at State House.
