Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano is currently in Japan to promote Kenya as the top investment choice in Africa.
In her efforts to attract Japanese investors, Miano has been actively engaging with potential stakeholders and highlighting the advantages of Kenya as a profitable market for trade and investment. During a meeting with Japanese investors on Friday, Miano emphasized Kenya's strong economic position as the largest economy in East Africa and one of the fastest-growing economies worldwide. She highlighted the country's exceptional human capital, emphasizing its high ranking within Africa.
To position Kenya as a gateway for global investors, Miano specifically mentioned key sectors that are ripe for investment, such as green energy, manufacturing, and technology. She encouraged Japanese investors to explore opportunities in Kenya's expanding manufacturing sector, specifically pointing out potential in automotive and e-mobility, textile and apparel, and electronics. This visit coincides with Toyota Tsusho Corporation's plans to establish a vehicle manufacturing plant in Kenya which is a significant milestone in the bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Leading the delegation, President William Ruto sees this initiative as a catalyst for Kenya's industrial growth and diplomatic relations with Japan. The Isiolo Solar Energy project and the Menengai Geothermal Plant are two examples of the continued economic collaboration between Kenya and Japan, paving the way for mutual prosperity. During a meeting with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kushida, President Ruto witnessed the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation in different sectors. These agreements include collaboration in the ICT sector, capacity building for the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) to strengthen pandemic management, and the issuance of a Samurai Bond.
Moreover, a Letter of Intent on Defense Cooperation was signed to strengthen the defence partnership and promote peace and stability in Africa. President Ruto on Friday reiterated Kenya's commitment to supporting the Japan-AU partnership, particularly through participation in meetings and summits under the auspices of TICAD.
