Mystery of 2,040 Bullets Found in an Abandoned Car in Nairobi

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives are in pursuit of the owner of a vehicle abandoned in Nairobi’s Mihango area with 2,040 bullets.

The Mitsubishi Lancer registration number KAT 887G, riddled with bullets and its windscreen shattered, was discovered on Wednesday after locals reported hearing gunshots at the scene the previous night.

2,040 rounds of ammunition of 7.62mm caliber packed in 34 boxes each containing 60 bullets were found in the car that had been abandoned opposite Be Energy Petrol Station on the Eastern Bypass on Tuesday night.

Occupants of another vehicle arrived at the scene and shot randomly at the Mitsubishi Lancer, according to a police report.

A witness told police that a gunman alighted from a white car and fired about 20 bullets at the abandoned vehicle. The shooter allegedly acted in rage and seemingly thought the target was in the car.

He also shot at two other vehicles, a white Toyota G-Touring registration plate KAW 161P and a Toyota Vitz registration number KBM 713Y, parked near the Mitsubishi Lancer.

“The G –Touring had a bullet hole in the rear windscreen while the Vitz had a bullet hole in the right rear door,” police said.

No one was found in the Mitsubishi Lancer, with police suspecting that the shooting was a result of a deal gone sour.

“The ownership of the car, bullets and shooting are part of what our teams are investigating for now. No arrest has been made,” Nairobi police commander Augustine Nthumbi said.

Two mobile phones—a Tecno Camon and an X-Tigi—were also found in the car. The vehicle was towed to Ruai police station while the 2,040 rounds of ammunition and a spent cartridge were kept as exhibits.
