How Daring Robbers Staged Sh3.5 Million Prime Bank Heist in Broad Daylight

New details of how six armed robbers executed a robbery at Prime Bank along Mombasa Road in broad daylight on Monday have emerged.

Reports indicate the thugs entered Hypermart Ltd posing as customers and told security officers that they wanted to buy a freezer.

They remained inside the complex until the bank’s truck arrived to transfer the day’s collection.

The robbers managed to disarm two police officers guarding the premises and held them hostage, together with security guards and the bank’s employees. They then demanded money from the cashiers.

A three-minute, 55 seconds video clip shared online shows one of the robbers manning the entrance of premises, where motorists are seen entering and exiting without suspecting that a robbery is underway.

Moments later, the suspect operating the gate is seen signaling at his accomplices, who come out confidently carrying money stashed in bags.

They then change their outfits and cross the busy Mombasa Road on foot before disappearing towards Embakasi.

Following the heist, the two police officers who were on duty on that day were arrested alongside a cashier. 

Detectives believe the three have crucial information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects, who are said to have made away with Sh3.5 million. Initial investigations point to an inside job.

The two officers from the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) of the Administration Police lost their Scorpion rifles loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition to the gang, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The lost firearms were recovered on Monday night after they were dropped by a motorbike pillion passenger outside Kiambu Hospital’s gate.
