Embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu on Tuesday claimed that he and his family were victims of political propaganda.
Speaking at the Senate during a plenary sitting over his impeachment, Governor Waititu accused a network of bloggers from Kiambu of spreading lies about him and his family in a bid to bring him down.
“Honorable House, you will see in this sitting, some politicians have paid bloggers to spread false stories about me and my family, they are all lies,” said Waititu.
He cited reports that detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had discovered KSh100 million in a bank account belonging to his daughter Monica Njeri, terming them false and malicious.
Waititu indicated that his daughter only had KSh9,000 in her bank account at the time EACC was investigating him over corruption allegations.
The Senate is sitting for two days — January 28th and 29th- to deliberate on Waititu’s impeachment. Waititu was impeached by members of the Kiambu County Assembly on December 19th, 2019 over abuse of office and gross misconduct.
If the Senate upholds any of the charges, Waititu will lose his seat as the Kiambu County Governor.
In July last year, the court barred Waititu from accessing his office until the corruption case against him is heard and determined. He was charged with graft-related charged over the alleged irregular award of contracts worth KSh588 million, in which companies linked to him and his family members allegedly benefited from.
