Cholera Outbreak: 12 Counties Put on Alert as 37 Kenyans Die, 147 Hospitalized

The Ministry of Health has put 12 counties on high alert following cases of Cholera outbreak in different parts of the country 

The counties include Narok, Kajiado, Nairobi, Garissa, Mandera, Machakos, Embu, Wajir, Mombasa, Turkana, Makueni and Kisumu, according to a report from the ministry.

4,961 cases of Cholera have been reported in the country since the beginning of the year, with 253 cases confirmed– 147 active and 37 deaths. The Cholera outbreak is active in four counties namely; Nairobi, Garissa, Mandera, and Turkana, while the other eight have managed to control it.

In Nairobi County, the cases are mainly from Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Starehe, Ruaraka, Kibera, Lang’ata, Kasarani, Dagoretti North, Westlands, and Kamukunji sub-counties.

Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe diarrhea that can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio Cholerae.
