Witchcraft Scam: Three Charged with Conning Nairobi Couple Out of Sh2 Million

Two Tanzanian nationals and a Kenyan were on Tuesday charged with conning a Nairobi couple out of Sh2 million.
The three suspects; Titus Fedha, Haji Shariff and Suleiman Salum are accused of obtaining the cash from Mr. Harbans Singh pretending that they were in a position to exorcise his land of witchcraft.
The three claimed that a prime piece of land which Mr. Harbans was intending to sell had evil spirits. They alleged the plot located in Westlands, Nairobi had a snake and other witchcraft paraphernalia including cowrie shells, gourds, black powders, and assorted clothing.
The court was told that the accused persons told the complainant that the witchcraft paraphernalia needed cleansing by burning the snake and scattering the ashes into the Indian Ocean.
The three allegedly convinced Harbans and his wife to part with Sh2 million for buying special oil to burn the snake, but the suspects disappeared after receiving the amount.
The accused persons also faced other counts among them cheating. They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were freed on a cash bail of Sh300,000 each.
Detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided a house belonging to Haji Shariff in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, where they recovered a suitcase containing the witchcraft paraphernalia.
The matter will be heard on September 26th, 2019.
