Five Employees Arrested for Allegedly Digging Tunnel, Stealing Sh1.5 Million from Microfinance

Police on Sunday arrested five suspects in connection with the robbery of Sh1.5 million from a Kitui-based microfinance.
The five are suspected of stealing the money after reportedly digging a tunnel into the Itoleka Financial Services Association’s (FSA) strongroom on Friday.
The five, who are employees of the aforementioned microfinance, walked away with the amount after entering the banking hall using the tunnel.
Police are also holding a night security guard who was on duty on the night the incident happened.
Reports indicate the employees had kept the cash in their office desk drawers instead of the bank’s safes.
Kitui Central Deputy OCPD Edward Legei said the security guard reported the incident on Saturday morning after discovering the tunnel.
“The night guard told the police that as he was patrolling the bank when he saw a tunnel,” he said.
The equipment used by the criminals to dig the tunnel was recovered at the scene. Investigations into the incident continue.
