Police in Nairobi Nab Suspect Behind Fake Work Permits

Police in Nairobi are holding a man believed to be the mastermind of fake work permits pending arraignment in court on Monday.

The suspect, who authorities did not name, is accused of infiltrating the Immigration Department and issuing forged work licenses to different companies and individuals.

Detectives recovered several documents bearing the logo and stamps of the Immigration Department during his arrest in the city on Saturday. Also seized were a mobile phone and laptop.

During a work permit verification exercise carried out in July last year, authorities seized 31 fake work permits and arrested three suspects.

During the exercise, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i issued orders for the deportation of several foreigners who were found without valid work permits.

Matiang’i also fired 28 immigration officers who were allegedly found to have received bribes to issue illegal work permits and other immigration documents.
